QIRIS operates as a multidisciplinary and participative platform for the creation of start-up companies starting from early-stage applied research ideas. QIRIS acts as a Venture Intellectual Capital firm whose business model is based on the concept of open innovation.
QIRIS operates as follows: students, engineers, researchers, and entrepreneurs bring their idea onto QIRIS. Although they keep the property of all the results of their ideas, they can develop their project with the help of the others, in person or using a web-based platform. QIRIS helps refine early-stage research ideas and evolves them into start-ups. Then, QIRIS invests intellectual capital in exchange of a percentage of the start-up (in equity).
By implementing a closed-loop system between scientific and technology entrepreneurship, QIRIS allows to:
- reduce overhead on technology transfer;
- avoid dispersion and minimize cost;
- mitigate risk associated with the start-up phase;
- improve the quality of projects;
- benefit from a network of competences, capabilities, and contacts.
Currently, the following research projects of QIRIS were lanched as independent start-ups:
